Spiritual Direction

SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR

Lin Van Hofwegen, MA

I have been engaged in the art and practice of Spiritual Direction since 2014 when I began training in the  Listening People to Life program through Sioux Falls Seminary. Prior to and during my seminary training, I worked in community and economic development serving low-income and rural communities. It was good work, and I am grateful for the experiences and the many impactful people I met along the way.

A unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) under the supervision of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services taught me to pay attention to the areas where I needed growth, stretching me to better self-awareness. The time spent with this CPE group was the catalyst that challenged me and gave me the confidence to enter into this work vocationally.

Participating in a two-year Transforming Community under the teaching of Ruth Haley Barton encouraged deep soul work and has been truly transformational. I have long been drawn to the spiritual practices that Christians down through the ages have used to open themselves to God's transforming work. TC16 gave me a framework of intentionality for the transformation I sought.

If you would like to explore Spiritual Direction for yourself, I offer a free 30-minute introductory Zoom or phone call to help you determine if spiritual direction with me is a good fit. If we decide together to move forward, monthly sessions either by Zoom or in person can be scheduled. This time is for you and about you, and you have the freedom to determine how often and how many sessions you want.

I also do Retreat Facilitation and have been known to preach from time to time.

In addition to providing Spiritual Direction, I serve part-time as a Chaplain at a local retirement center and work with Kairos University students as they seek Competency-Based Theological Education.

GARDENS AND PRAYER

Mert Van Hofwegen

Chief Gardener, Caretaker, and Chef Extraordinaire

It all begins with a good support system. Nothing could be done without Mert’s work and support for the ministry of spiritual formation. Mert’s gifts include prayer, lots of prayer - and he cooks wonderful meals. In the summertime, he grows a beautiful garden that feeds many in the community.

Mert & Lin have been married 46 years and love nothing more than using their home to host others.

“Grandpa Mert is the best cooker” - Lucy, age 6

A good spiritual director helps you see what God is saying and doing in your life. They help you listen to God’s will for your life, and then support you in doing it.
